Why an 8x8 grid?+
8x8 is arguably the most fundamental constraint for pixel art, famously allowing classic RPG sprites and the original Mario to be readable icons despite having severely limited graphical memory constraints.
Why does the download upscale it to 800x800?+
If we downloaded the raw 8x8 pixel file, your operating system would attempt to blur or anti-alias the image when you set it as a profile picture. We explicitly generate a massive 800px image with hard, crisp squares so it continues to look perfectly retro.
