Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 4 written as IV, not IIII?+
The subtractive principle (IV = 5-1 = 4) is the standard modern form. However, IIII (additive form) is also historically valid and is commonly used on clock faces - known as the "watchmaker's four." Both are correct.
What is the largest Roman numeral?+
Standard Roman numerals max out at 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). For larger numbers, a vinculum (bar) over a numeral multiplies it by 1,000: V̅ = 5,000, X̅ = 10,000, L̅ = 50,000.
